Accommodation

Study Abroad students have a variety of accommodation options. These include on-campus dormitory (Residential College) options and off-campus residences organised by UNSW Study Abroad. Alternatively, students may find their own accommodation if they wish.

Guaranteed Housing
UNSW Study Abroad guarantees off-campus housing, provided housing applications are submitting before the closing date. Application forms are included in pre-departure packages sent to students who accept their offer.

It may be worth comparing UNSW Study Abroad off-campuses prices with local real estate rental, bond, utilities and furnishing costs in the area when deciding on where to live.

The Study Abroad off-campus accommodation periods are limited from the prior to the start of semester until the last day of exams, so if you intend to arrive earlier in Sydney or stay after your exams, you might like to also look at temporary accommodation in the area.

There are also other options for off-campus housing that you might like to consider. The UNSW Housing Office provides an overview on options in the area. Please be aware that the UNSW Housing Office is operated independently of UNSW Study Abroad Housing.

Applying for Study Abroad Housing
Students who have been accepted into the Semester Program will be sent a pre-departure pack that contains an application form for Study Abroad housing. Housing application forms should be returned to the Study Abroad Office, indicating whether you will require Study Abroad housing, or intend to apply for UNSW on-campus accommodation, or will find your own accommodation. Students intending to apply for Study Abroad housing should do so before the closing date, otherwise housing cannot be guaranteed .

On-campus Accommodation
Residential Colleges on campus are operated independently of the University, and of UNSW Study Abroad. They foster an atmosphere in keeping with their own ethical values and educational philosophy. College life is more than just accommodation - it is an integral part of the education process, helping students to grow and mature as individuals. Residents are expected to conduct themselves according to a College's expectations of behaviour. They are encouraged to participate in the community life of the College - social events, sports and other organised activities.

As well as residence fees (between A$200 and A$250 a week) most Colleges also charge for registration fees, damage and key deposit. Each College has its own evaluation and selection criteria.

International House
International House accommodates 152 students from Australia and over 30 other countries. Half of the residents come from overseas; half are female; half are undergraduates and half graduates. As residents tend to be senior students, a quiet atmosphere conducive to study is encouraged.

Goldstein College provides a comfortable, informal environment for 75 residents. Baxter College is the newest and largest of the three Kensington Colleges, catering for 212 students and 9 academic staff.

Finding your own accommodation, and temporary accommodation
Finding a flat to rent in Sydney can be difficult for Study Abroad students, as Sydney landlords typically require a minimum six-month lease to be signed. If you intend to find your own off-campus accommodation, you should start searching at least two to three weeks before your studies begin.

If you wish to secure your own accommodation, the UNSW Housing website provides a comprehensive guide to the range of options for low-cost short-term accommodation, hostels, hotels and furnished apartments in the region.
