Short Courses

Short courses are also available to local students enrolled in full degree programs at UNSW.

Any undergraduate students may apply to MSCI2051: Coral Reefs: Ecology and Environment. Local students enrolled in the School of Latin American studies may apply to SPAN6206: Spanish in Oaxaca, Mexico.


MSCI2051: Coral Reefs: Ecology and Environment
Semester 1 2010: 11 February - 18 February 2010
Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef


The pre-semester short course is conducted on Lady Elliot Island on the Great Barrier Reef. UNSW Study Abroad students enrolled in the Semester Program can enrol in this course for credit. The program is conducted for one week in mid-February and mid-July each year.

The course is at an introductory level with no prerequisite requirements. Students with a biological science background may undertake advanced study.

This course involves lectures, on-site marine observation and discussion of topic areas such as corals, types of reefs, water characteristics, reef communities, environmental issues and management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The field trip is conducted on the reef at Lady Elliot Island and includes study of the reef flat, its inhabitants, their distribution and interactions, the reef environment and its measurement. Diving is not required as part of the practical work, but recreational diving and snorkelling are available.

Lady Elliot Island is the southernmost coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef, situated 80 kilometres northeast of Bundaberg. The 42-hectare island is an integral part of the Capricornia section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. February is the turtle and bird nesting season and July offers whale watching.

How to apply
Any student who has accepted their offer to the Semester Program is eligible to enrol in the Pre-Semester Short Course Coral Reefs: Ecology and Environment on the Great Barrier Reef.

To apply, download and complete the application form to the left side of this page. Submit your application to Study Abroad after your application to the Semester Program has been approved.

Pre-semester Short Course scholarship
Any student enrolled in the Pre-Semester Short Course Coral Reefs: Ecology and Environment on the Great Barrier Reef can apply for a scholarship which covers the course fee, which includes six nights and seven days on Lady Elliot Island. SPAN6206: Spanish in Oaxaca, Mexico
2010: 15 January - 13 February

This intensive four week Spanish language program is run in Oaxaca, Mexico each year. The course is open to UNSW students currently enrolled in the School of Latin American Studies, and gains students 6 units of credit that can be substituted for one of their major Spanish language classes.

Oaxaca (pronounced ‘wah-HAH-kah’) is a small city of 250-300,000 people and the capital of the State of Oaxaca. It is 440kms to the south-west of Mexico City, is set at 5,000ft above sea level and is one of Mexico’s most beautiful cities.

The course is run through the Instituto Cultural de Oaxaca - a private language centre that offers intensive Spanish language and culture courses for foreign students. The ICO has organised a diverse cultural program for UNSW students.

Course Fee
The fee is $2,250 per student. This covers:

- Four weeks of intensive Spanish language classes
- ‘Intercambio’ discussions – language conversation swaps with Mexican students
- Activity workshops, such as salsa and meringue dancing, regional cooking, and ceramics
- Weekly seminars on a variety of cultural themes, such as Pre-hispanic culture, politics in Mexico, Oaxacan artists, traditional costumes and customs
- Volunteer weekend in Llao Grande, a small village in the Sierra Norte
- Accommodation and food- housing with families, including three meals per day
- UNSW Travel insurance (excluding electrical items)

Students must organise their own airfares, and it is recommended to book these as early as possible.
